I | The Painted Face Collection:
During
the middle 1980s, a friend of mine convinced his father to
mortgage his house so we could start up a computer-aided ink and paint
service to serve producers of animated TV commercials. We purchased
$100,000 worth of computers, video and animation equipment.
The graphics computers or "paintboxes" were expensive
($10,000) custom built devices with slow
processors. But they
were capable of producing a
broadcast quality video image, and (by photographing the high
resolution color monitor) a 35 mm negative or transparency. As we
trained to use these machines I taught
myself to digitally paint images.
Over the years, advances in digital technology allowed
visual artists to expand the range of tools to create
astonishing images. Learning to work with digital
painting tools fueled my quest to integrate digital and natural media creation processes. Traditional and
virtual artmaking tools are equally important to me. The Painted Face surveys my earliest efforts to explore the realms of shapes and
colors that I found satisfying while working with digital tools.
